Learn to prepare jams and fruit juices

Are you interested in discovering the seasonal fruits of the Casamance region, and learning how these products were traditionally preserved as jams, jellies, and juices? In this experience, you have the chance to spend a few hours immersed in the Diannah forests, where a local organization will introduce you to their seasonal produce. In a workshop led by community members, you will learn how to transform local mangoes, papayas, and oranges into flavorful jams and juices. No colorants, thickeners, preservatives, or other additives are used in the preparation, ensuring a final product with a flavor that is authentic and delicious! At the end of the activities, you will be able to taste the creations that you and your fellow travelers prepared – and, you’ll be able to bring home to your family and friends not only your homemade jams and juices, but also traditional techniques of food preparation that you can use in your own kitchen!

Not included

The cost of the activity does not include transport, flights, meals, and accommodations. If you wish, you can eat lunch in Shashamani, where the local community can prepare traditional dishes with organic produce from the region. The price per person / meal ranges from 1500 – 2500 FCFA. If you plan to purchase lunch, please communicate your wishes ahead of time so the restaurant team can be sure to have the meal ready in a timely manner.

How to get there

If you enjoy “do-it-yourself” travel, we recommend taking public transportation. The village of Diannah, not far from Kafountine, is located an hour from the Banjul airport and two hours from Ziguinchor.

– Dakar – Ziguinchor Ferry

There is a boat from Dakar twice a week on Tuesdays and Friday. It departs Dakar around 8 pm and arrives at the Ziguinchor port the following day around 10 am. Boarding takes place between 3 and 6 pm on the day of departure. 

Departures from Ziguinchor take place on Thursdays and Sundays at 1 pm, with arrival scheduled in Dakar the next day around 7 am. Boarding takes place between 11 am and 1 pm on the day of departure. 

You must reserve your ticket in advance: 

In Dakar, visit COSAMA (Consortium Sénégalais d’Activités Maritimes) on Boulevard de la Liberation N°1 (on the corner of the street leading to the port), next to the Gorée Island Embarcadère.

To reserve (available by agency), please prepare a photocopy of your passport. 

Fare per person: circa 15,500 FCFA for a couch; 18,500 for a bed in the 8-person dorm; 28,500 FCFA for a bed in the 4-person dorm; 30,500 FCFA for a 2-person private cabin. There is a restaurant on board. 

 

-Taking a 7-person shared taxi (sept-place) 

From the Dakar taxi garage (Gare Pompiers / Beau Maraichers), take a “sept-place” that goes directly to Ziguinchor. It is important to leave very early in the morning because the trip takes about 10+ hours. The price of a seat in a sept-place car is 9,500 FCFA, with an additional 500 – 1000 FCFA depending on luggage. 

NOTE: The car passes on the Transgambian Road; some passport-holders may need a visa and/or to pay a transit fee to pass through The Gambia. 

 

-By plane 

There are daily flights offered by Senegal Airlines; flights depart from the Dakar airport and land at the Ziguinchor airport.
