Explore the mangrove forests of the Karone Islands

An excursion in a pirogue boat, the traditional boat of a Senegalese fisherman, is one of the most fascinating experiences in the Casamance. The Casamance is the southernmost region in Senegal, traversed by its namesake, the Casamance River, whose waters flow into the Atlantic; in this area, ocean, river, mangrove, palm, and tropical forest meet and mingle. This activity offers you a chance to explore the mysterious and fascinating island of Karone, where mysticism and religious syncretism are still present today – and make our boat journey even more intriguing. On this ride, you will be able to admire the characteristic mangrove landscapes in the company of a local guide and the pirogue driver; during the trip, you will travel in and out of mangrove forests, and you will observe unique and rare bird species from up close. Let yourself be charmed by these dreamlike landscapes and the many mangrove-landen islands of this river – which to this day, remains pristine and untouched.
